Born in 1904 in Rotterdam, Netherlands, Willem de Kooning emigrated to New York in 1926 and became one of the most well-known representatives of Abstract Expressionism in the USA. De Kooning's painting refers to biomorphic forms and dynamic brushwork; his famous Woman series has found its place in the canon of modern art history. His constant reworking of overlapping forms resulted in a composition of ambiguities that makes it difficult to distinguish between foreground and background while pushing the subject even further into abstraction.
